    Increase in VAT in Greece

The plans to increase Greek VAT from June 2016 are likely to extend to other areas in 2017 as well

With the approval of the Greek Parliament on 22 May 2016, the Greek standard tax rate was increased from 23% to 24%. This measure has been requested by the European Union and other international creditors to provide new funding for the troubled country.

As part of the reforms, the VAT system has been further harmonized

Since the adopted reform, Greece now has three tax rates: 6%, 13% and 24%. The reduced tax rate of 13% applies to certain foodstuffs and to water, agriculture and care. The reduced rate of 6% also applies, among other things, to pharmaceutical products; Books and newspapers, theater tickets and hotel accommodation.

Recently, certain foods now fall below the maximum rate of 24% and thus increase the cost of living. Some supermarkets had already announced in the course of these measures, not to increase the prices. However, according to experts, life will become more expensive for many Greeks in the long term.

The special tax rates have been abolished on six Greek islands

On the islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Paros, Naxos and Skiathos, the special tax benefits were abolished on October 1, 2016. The previously applicable special tax rates were mainly justified by strengthening tourism on the islands. Critics now fear that higher tax rates could now hit the poorer island population.

From 1 January 2017, the new tax rate will be extended to other Aegean islands

As part of the planned reforms, the remaining tax credits on other Aegean islands will now be abolished in order to increase government revenues and thereby meet the demands of international creditors. Further tax increases are expected in the coming year, in particular for fuels, tobacco, coffee and telecommunications services

VAT paid in EU countries abroad can not be claimed by German entrepreneurs as input tax at the German tax authorities. As part of the advance VAT registration and the annual VAT return, only the deduction of German VAT is allowed.

he team of "Foreign VAT Return Online" says:

If your company is charged Greek sales tax, this will lead to even more financial burdens in the future, unless you claim the amounts as input tax. Precisely because of this background, entrepreneurs should definitely use the possibility of the input tax refund procedure in order to have the amounts paid back in this way.
